The NATIONAL VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE in Puławy was established in 1945 as a scientific institution of the Ministry of Agriculture. A statutory mission of the Institute is to conduct scientific research in the field of veterinary medicine with a special insight into the diagnosis and prophylaxis of infectious diseases (including diseases transmissible from animals) as well as hygiene and toxicology of food of animal origin and feedingstuffs. Moreover, the Institute functions as the National Reference Laboratory in the field of epidemiologic situation assessment and monitoring xenobiotic residues in food of animal origin and feed. It also conducts control and pre-registration evaluation of veterinary biological preparations, supervises the regional veterinary diagnostic laboratories, and provides an expertise service for the Ministry of Agriculture and veterinary administration. Additionally, the Institute runs postgraduate training for veterinarians and doctoral stationary studies.

The Institute comprises units representing basic scientific disciplines such as microbiology, biochemistry, pathology, toxicology, physiopathology reproduction, hygiene of food of animal origin and feedstuffs, and units involved in research on diseases of different animal species or diseases crucial for animal production (e.g. foot-and-mouth disease).

The basic research issues include the following:
• aetiology, diagnostics, and prophylaxis of infectious and parasitic diseases,
• hygiene of food of animal origin and feeds,
• veterinary toxicology and pharmacology,
• physiopathology of reproduction and diseases of the mammary glands

The Institute possesses modern well-equipped research laboratories and highly-qualified staff. The scientific achievements are presented in the form of publications, instructions, and lecturers. The Institute issues a scientific English-language journal – Bulletin of the Veterinary Institute in Pulawy, where original research papers of Polish and foreign authors are being published.

The Institute is entitled to confer scientific degrees of Doctor of Science in Veterinary Medicine (ScD) and Doctor of Veterinary Sciences (PhD).
The Institute’s library offers a rich collection of books (about 30 000 copies) and scientific journals (over 700 titles) in the field of veterinary medicine and similar disciplines.
