NIEUWEGEIN - THE NETHERLANDS

Cooperation with this Dutch town has been developing since 1994. Nieuwegein is a former agricultural-trade community, presently a modern town situated in the centre of the Netherlands, 15 km from Utrecht. It was formed in 1971 after merging two smaller cities - Jutphaas and Vreeswijk. Nieuwegein occupies the area of 32 km2 and is inhabited by around 60 000 people.

In 1992 the Nieuwegein Town Council expressed will to establish longterm contacts with a similar town in Central Europe or Eastern Europe. The formal consent for the cooperation between Puławy and Nieuwegein was signed on June 30th 1994. The Letter of Intent was signed on May 24th 1996. The main goals of the cooperation of Nieuwegein and Puławy are the following: help in the range of local tourism development, especially promotion of the touristic traingle Puławy-Kazimierz Dolny-Nałęczów, plannning and executing the town's development, housing policy, supporting the local trade and industry, primary and secondary schooling, health care development. Due to this cooperation the Puławy School nr 3 established relationships with the Dutch teenagers in the range of the UE - Commenius programme.

The cooperation with the Dutch is also based on the exchange of experiences in domains such as: environment protection, culture and local government. Experience exchange concerning the ways of sustaining the municipal greenery as well as managing the municipal waste is of large importance.

Cooperation between the Lublin Voivodeship and Gelderland province is also developing. In 1997 the local authorities of 10 Vistula communes, voivodeship authorities, Board of the Lublin landscape Parks together with partners from the Netherlands began preparation works on „Vistula communes environment protection programme".
In September 2001 the Commitee Supporting Puławy Park Renovation was created, whose task is to contribute to the renovation of the Puławy park, destroyed during the hurricane in August 2001. Both twin towns organize photographic exhibitions, open-air painting sessions as well as dancing groups shows. In 2003 the representants of the Dutch delegation brought rehabilitation equipment - a gift from the inhabitants of Nieuwegein for?the Integrative-Rahabilitation Centre in Pu?awy. The equipment was during the festivity "Puławy Town for the Vistula River", organized during the Days of Puławy.

In July 2003 the Letter of Intent concerning the cooperaton with the Housing+ foundation was signed, in the range of which the project „Constant housing management in the Central and East European housing sector” is to be realized. The project was submitted to financing to the European Commission in MATRA programme.

 COOPERATION WITH NIEUWEGEIN IN 2010


 Visit of Wim Kroon and Henk Verbeek

From 16th to 17th of January 2010 representatives of the Initiative Group from Nieuwegein: Wim Kroon and Henk Verbeek visited Puławy. The visit aimed at making contacts with sports clubs of Puławy enabling cooperation in the scope of sports and exchange of sportsmen. Meetings with representatives of the Complex of Schools of General Education No. 2 concerning eventual youth exchange with Anna avn Rijn college in Nieuwegein and with the director of the Cultural Centre of Puławy ‘Dom Chemika’ concerning the musical and cultural project were organised.


 Visit of a delegation from Nieuwegein

From 18th to 19th of February Puławy were visited by a Dutch delegation from Nieuwegein. The aim of the visit was comparison of a situation of Roma society in Puławy and Nieuwegein. During those two days there were meetings in the Town Hall of Puławy and Primary School No. 4 during which problems of the Roma were discussed. During the visit the Dutch delegation with representatives of the Municipal Welfare Centre visited several Roma families. The main subjects that were discussed during the meetings were education, housing conditions and issues concerning social care. Representatives of both cities exchanged experiences and ideas as far as projects realised in this scope by Puławy and Nieuwegein are concerned.

 Visit of a delegation from Puławy in Nieuwegein

From 22th to 24th of February 2010 at request of the Mayor of our Dutch partner town, managers of the Cooperation and Social Communication Office and Brand and Promotion Office visited Nieuwegein. The main goal of the visit was to present the concept of Puławy’s brand, strategy of the town’s promotion  as well as new Visual Identification System. During the two days’ visit Puławy, changes which have occurred during the last year in the city and future projects were presented.  In the meetings participated the Mayor of Nieuwegein – Cor de Vos, management of the city, directors of strategic departments and employees of Social Communication Office.
Delegation from Puławy was interviewed by a local press from Nieuwegein. The interview concerned cooperation between the two cities, its progress and benefits for both societies that are the result of the partnership. During the stay in Nieuwegein delegation from Puławy visited Centre of Ecological Education and Municipal Information Centre where citizens of Nieuwegein may acquaint themselves with a mock-up of the project of reconstruction of the town’s centre. The visit was another opportunity to exchange knowledge, experiences and ideas for further cooperation.

 Castings for the Polish-Dutch project of youth exchange

From 5th to 6th of March Puławy was visited by representatives of the Initiative Group from Nieuwegein. The visit aimed at making castings and choosing a group of young people that was to take part in the project. The first stage of audition was in European Gymnasium, Public Gymnasium No. 4, Public Gymnasium No. 1, Public Gymnasium No. 3 and in the Cultural Centre of Puławy ‘Dom Chemika’. The final audition was organised in the Cultural Centre of Puławy ‘Dom Chemika’. A group of 20 young people was chosen to take part in the project.

 Polish-Dutch Project of youth exchange

The project of youth exchange is a project between Puławy and its partner town from Holland – Nieuwegein. Its aim is to make a joint performance of dance, song and acting and to present culture and tradition of both countries as well as enable young people to contact with their peers from other part of Europe. The youth exchange has not only the cultural background, it aims also at developing language skills. What is also worthwhile to mention is the fact that in the project participate also children from the orphanage of Puławy. In March children take part in auditions organised by the culture centre ‘Dom Chemika’, in October the selected ones and children from Nieuwegein make a joint performance in Puławy and in June children from Puławy go to Nieuwegein to make the same show for the Dutch audience.

 Partner Towns Festival

From 6th to 8th of June 2010 Puławy was visited by delegations of the following partner towns: Nieuwegein (Hollnad), Douai (France), Bojarka (Ukraine) and Dublany (Ukraine).
During the visit the delegations visited schools where waited prepared by children performances, lessons and sports activities shows as well as presentation of foreign exchange. The official delegation of Nieuwegein which was composed of Anneleen Verbeek, Henk Verbeek and Guido Bamberg who visited Primary School No. 3 where they could watch a presentation prepared by pupils about the countries they cooperate with in the scope of ‘Smash’ project. Michiele Bush – a teacher of van Rijn college in Nieuwegein and the forth member of the Dutch delegation had a meeting with the headmaster of the Complex of Schools for General Education No. 2.
This year we celebrated  the 10th anniversary of cooperation between Bojarka and Puławy. One of the attractions was a performance in the Cultural Centre of Puławy. Besides the performance of ‘Asgard’ from Bojarka, the anniversary celebration included also performances of Polish groups ‘Etiuda’ and ‘Powiśle’ and planting of a memorial tree. In the celebration participated not only the representatives of Bojarka nad Puławy but also representatives of all the partner towns of Puławy taking part in the IVth Partner Towns Festival, authorities of Puławy and guests.
During the jubilee a competition for primary school pupils  titled ‘Partnership of towns – what is the most important...’ was settled.
During the delegations’ stay in Puławy also the second meeting concerning Polish and Dutch project of youth exchange realised by the Cultural Centre of Puławy ‘Dom Chemika’ with Nieuwegein took place. This time the Polish participants of the project and their parents had a chance to meet and talk to not only the representatives of the Cultural Centre but also the Dutch organiser – Anneleen Verbeek and the whole Dutch delegation.
This year’s meeting was another occasion to strengthen the bonds between the towns, to exchange experiences and to talk about future common undertakings.

 ‘Something old, something new’

‘Something old, something new’ is a title of a performance presented on 22nd of October 2010 in the Cultural Centre of Puławy ‘Dom Chemika’. It was prepared together by Polish and Dutch youth in the scope of project titled ‘Community of dreams’ (“Wspólnota Marzeń”).
The show was also an occasion for the representatives of the partner towns Nieuwegein and Stendal to hand over symbolic cheques to the voits of communities which suffered in this year’s flood: Janowiec and Wilków. Financial means for the people who suffered in the flood were collected during charity actions organised in both towns.
Show titled ‘Something old, something new’ joins past with future. Due to a magical suitcase accidently found on the street, two young people transfer in time. In visited periods they meet famous artists: Marylin Monroe, Elvis Presley, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson and Mickey Mouse...
Anneleen Verbeek is the director of the show. Lindsey Senft and Wojciech Gędek took care of dance preparation of the participants.
The project realised by ‘Dom Chemika’ and Initiative Group Nieuwegein-Puławy gave the youth of the two partner towns a possibility to meet and commonly realise the undertaking of dance and music. The script of the show was prepared by the Dutch youth.
The main aim of youth from both cities during their stay in Puławy (17th-24th of October) was the common work over the performance in English, practicing English and mainly integration and mutual learning of the two different cultures. Between rehearsals and creating the common work, the youth had an occasion to visit the Chemical Technical School where the young people could participate in carrying out chemical experiments. The Dutch visited also the orphanage where they learnt the way the institution is functioning, they met their old friends – participants of the previous edition of the project. Our Dutch friends handed over clothes they brought from Holland for the children living in the orphanage. It is also worthwhile to mention that children from the orphanage in Puławy each time participate in every edition of the project.
An important point of the week-long stay of the Dutch youth in Puławy was an excursion to Lublin and most of all a visit in the Museum of Majdanek.
The project has been realised with financial support of European Commission in the scope of the programme ‘Youth in action’.

 Visit of an official delegation from Nieuwegein in Puławy

From 22nd to 24th of October an official delegation from Nieuwegein visited Puławy. The delegation consisted in: Cor de Vos – the Mayor of Nieuwegein, Bert Lubbinge – member of the management board, Erik Luchtenburg – IT specialist, Willianne van Slooten – Coordinator of Foreign Cooperation and Fund Raising. The delegation included also members of the Initiative Group: Geraldine Schimmel, John Sloot, Wim Kroon, Geert Quee and Jaap Lith.
Guests from our partner town had an occasion to admire with us the results of common work of Polish and Dutch youth –  the show ‘Something old, something new’ presented in the Cultural Centre of Puławy ‘Dom Chemika’.
On 23rd of October meetings concerning the Roma project, work of the Initiative Groups, cooperation of hospitals, sports cooperation between the two cities and the broadband Internet were held. The meetings constituted a splendid occasion to exchange knowledge and experiences. The meetings ended in a promise to continue cooperation in the mentioned above areas.


Festival of Partner Towns 4th-7th of June 2011

On 4th-7th of June 2011 the Festival of Partner Towns was organised. Participants of this event were delegations from the following partner towns of Puławy: Bojarka (Ukraine), Douai (France), Dublany (Ukraine), Nieśwież (Belarus), Nieuwegein (Holland) and Stendal (Germany). For the first time the city of Puławy was organiser of the Festival of Partner Towns as the winner of the European Diploma. The meeting, just like each year, was an opportunity to exchange experiences and to prepare plans for the future. On 5th of June there was a Partner Towns’ Football Tournament in which teams from Bojarka (Ukraine), Douai (France) and Puławy participated. The matches ended in victory of Bojarka. During breaks of football matches there were performances of POPCORN – a group of cheerleaders from Stendal. During one of the breaks the final of arts competition for pupils of kindergartens and primary schools titled “Europe for Euro 2012” was announced. It was the second edition of the competition related to celebration of the Festival of Partner Towns. In the afternoon, on the Vistula Boulevard during the Festival of Sea Song GREEN HORN there was a concert of a Dutch group YAZZOO from Nieuwegein. On Monday, on 6th of June delegations visited high schools of Puławy. Teachers and students prepared debates concerning European integration. Some of the propositions were: hare and hounds, charades, discussions, workshops. Among the discussed subjects there were: educational system in France, stereotypes about Polish and German people, sports and exceptional attitudes of sportsmen. In the afternoon delegations had an opportunity to visit the Museum of Czartoryskis where they acquainted themselves with a presentation titled ‘The Czartoryskis Family in the context of Europe’.
Certainly, contact which was established between the participants of the meetings will develop and change into a permanent cooperation. During the Festival of Partner Towns there was also a meeting of mayors of Nieuwegein and Puławy during which the directions for future cooperation were set. The guests were also offered to visit the biggest municipal investments in Puławy: The Science and Technological Park of Puławy and football stadium.
The Festival of Partner Towns received a co-financing from The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency in the scope of ‘Europe for Citizens 2007-2014’ programme.
