PUŁAWY - TOWN ARISEN FROM A GARDEN

PUŁAWY - TOWN ARISEN FROM A GARDEN

Puławy is a town of 50 thousand inhabitants situated on the right bank of the Vistula river, in its middle course, on the border of three geographical regions – Mazowiecka Lowland, Małopolska Gap of the Vistula and Lublin Upland. The unique palace-and-park complex, picturesque landscapes, rich fauna and flora of ‘the tourist triangle’ (Puławy – Kazimierz Dolny – Nałęczów) are factors which attract masses of tourists every year. On the other hand, modern industry and a well-developed communal background, high living standard of the inhabitants as well as intensive actions carried out to attract the investors make it an exceptional town in the region.

Puławy is a garden-town with a beautiful palace-and-park complex of the Czartoryski family. The residence, together with the park and its small architecture structure, determine the town’s tourist attractiveness. Puławy is a resilient scientific, research, industrial and tourist centre, employing new technologies. It is a town in which tradition interweaves with modernity, which develops in agreement with contemporary needs and a respect for natural values, at the same time drawing from the cultural heritage. This sustainable development, compatible with the adopted Development Strategy for Puławy for 2004-2014 and other programme documents is the result of numerous actions undertaken by the local authorities and investment projects realized to raise the communal quality. Intensive expansion of economic potential does not change the fact that Puławy remains a green and friendly place. Due to gross forests and municipal greenery (trees, greenery at housing estates, green squares, parks, cemeteries and garden-plots) the forest density of the town reaches 36% (in Poland the average density is 28% and in the region
it equals 24%).

Among the tourist-recreation attractions of Puławy and its surroundings are:
• Vistula river boulevard and 11 km shore line available for different forms of leisure and water sports
• English style park – former residence of the Czartoryski family (32 ha)
• natural reserve “Łęg on Kępa” (4,5 ha)
• 4 bicycle paths in the town’s borders and through most attractive forest areas
• tourist tracks network leading through most beautiful and cleanest areas (e.g. the uniquely shaped loess ravines)
• canoeing trips on three rivers – the Vistula, Kurówka and Wieprz
• the Kazimierz Landscape Park
• ski lifts in Parchatka and Rąblów (open in winter season)

Over the years there have been annual events of international rank organized in Puławy, such as: International Jazz Music Workshops, Chamber Music Workshops, Polish Traditional Dance Tournament “O Pierścień Księżnej Izabeli” – National Championships and National Meetings of Puppet-Show Artists. In June, on the occasion of the ‘Days of Puławy’ and ‘Days of the Chemist”, cycles of concerts, theater performances and exhibitions are organized.

Puławy is a relatively young town – it was granted municipal rights in 1906. Already in the semi-war period the town had been an important agricultural scientific centre (on the basis of the Polytechnic and Agricultural-Forest Institute, founded in 1869 by the tsar’s authorities). Currently, the town is the seat of numerous significant scientific posts i.e. Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – National Research Institute, Apiculture Division of the Institute of Pomology and Floriculture, National Veterinary Institute – National Research Institute, Fertilizers Research Institute and Military Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology – Diagnostic Centre of Biohazard Combat. The industrial nature of the town is determined by the activity of Nitrogen Works “Puławy” SA – the largest Polish producer of nitrogen fertilizers, melamine and caprolactam. In 2003 the Puławy Town Hall and Nitrogen Works signed a letter of intent concerning the foundation of the Puławy Production Park. This mutual initiative is aimed at stimulating the local economy, raising the investment attractiveness of Puławy and establishing new job posts. The factory offered well-equipped areas for investment and media access, while the town proposed tax allowances, help in setting up business activity and to acquire financial means from the local authorities and the European Union.

In 2006 the town was awarded with the title GOLDEN LOCATION FOR INVESTMENT. In the investment attractiveness ranking of Polish towns, prepared in the last years by the Institute for Market Economics, Puławy was classified in the highest class A, as the only town in the Lublin region. There are over 5 thousand economic entities registered in the town. In the nearest future the investment attractiveness will rise substantially due to new bridge construction on the Vistula river. This investment is to be an important stimulus for the evolution of the entire municipal centre.

Puławy is a unique, dynamically evolving centre, open for new initiatives. Numerous monuments, folk art items, sacral architecture and natural beauty constitute indisputable town’s assets. “Past for the Future” – motto derived from the vault of the Sybil’s Temple is the symbol of the union of tradition and progress. The town is hospitable and friendly for the inhabitants and tourists. Its diversified and picturesque landscapes, as well as developing tourist base, establish welcoming atmosphere to rest, while the interesting premises and attractive grounds encourage to invest.
